Southington High School’s (SHS) top three students agreed on three things when reminiscing on their soon-to-be-over high school days:

They couldn’t have done it without each other. They will remember their time at SHS fondly, and even though they are leaving Southington for college this fall, they’ll be back.

As they prepare to turn their tassels at graduation next Friday, Timothy Cocozza, Emily Maciejewski, and Natalia Gimenez, leave SHS behind with a wealth of positive advice for underclassmen.

The first tip on their list: Don’t take anything too seriously. Although the three seniors worked hard to maintain their high GPA’s throughout high school, they agreed that the friendly competition between them died down after their freshman year.

“After that, we just motivated each other,” said Cocozza, the 2016 SHS valedictorian. “What mattered was that we did our best.”

They said that they hope to pass on their sense of camaraderie to future classes with a few words of wisdom to this year’s underclassmen and next year’s freshmen.

“Get involved in as much as you possibly can and just be happy,” Cocozza said.

For salutatorian Maciejewski, the key is communication and cooperation. “Never be afraid to ask for help,” she said. “You have a whole community behind you to support you.”

Gimenez, the Class of 2016 essayist, hopes to encourage others to be kind, friendly, and eager to pay compliments to one another in order to brighten someone’s day. “Smile, love everyone, and remember life is wonderful,” she said.

Timothy Cocozza, Class of 2016 valedictorian

Cocozza, a year-round volleyball player, maintained his rank as first in the class of 467 students for all four years. This fall, he will attend the University of Connecticut (UConn) where he will seek a double major in psychology and allied health, with plans to attend medical school for pediatric oncology.

While Cocazza said he greatly enjoyed his psychology and anatomy courses at SHS because “they motivated me for what I wanted to do,” many of his extracurricular opportunities at SHS inspired his career plans.

During his high school tenure, Cocozza participated in Project Lead the Way and the UConn Early College Experience, where he shadowed Dr. William Pesce at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain.

The valedictorian said his schedule included lots of after-school help from his teachers, and he found a great mentor in Rebecca Migliaro, who teaches AP literature and composition.

“She taught me to be confident in myself and who I want to become,” said Cocozza, and he added that her advice had a major impact on his success by adding to his internal motivation.

“It’s been about believing in myself and focusing on the positive” said Cocozza, who said he hopes to work with children. “With my personality, I can really cheer people up,” he said.

Outside the classroom, Cocozza said he experienced a lot of inclusion and collaboration around the school.

“Everyone gets their time in the spotlight,” said Cocozza, whether it be in robotics, band, or athletics.

A member of the boys varsity volleyball team, Cocozza also plays for the New England Husky Boys Volleyball team, and manages the SHS girls volleyball team.

Off the court, he is a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), the math team, and the SHS Knights of the Round Table. His favorite activities included volleyball and working on the ride management team at Lake Compounce.

Emily Maciejewski, Class of 2016 salutatorian

Emily Maciejewski, Class of 2016 salutatorian

Salutatorian Emily Maciejewski will join Cocozza at UConn this fall, where she will study mechanical engineering with plans to pursue a career in the areas of aerospace or computer science.

Miciejewski said it has always been ingrained in her to be the best she can be, and that she benefited greatly from opportunities like Project Lead the Way, which solidified her desire to become an engineer.

She said that when it came to class work, she has always loved solving math problems. “It’s so cool how a lot of the problems are little puzzle pieces you can put together,” she said.

Miciejewski was a captain of the varsity girl’s soccer team. She competed in indoor and outdoor track, and is a member of the Academia Futbol club in Cheshire where she plays soccer year round.

The senior spearheaded a recycling program throughout the school, was involved in the Key Club, the Jump Start Summer Program at Hatton Elementary School, and was a member of NHS and the math team. She also found time to play violin for the orchestra and the drama club orchestral pit.

Natalia Gimenez, Class of 2016 essayist

Natalia Gimenez, Class of 2016 essayist

Gimenez, ranking third in the graduating class, will head off to Utah in the fall, following in her sisters’ footsteps at Brigham Young University. There, she hopes to study language arts, English, and foreign languages.

“The syntax of different languages are so beautiful,” said Gimenez, a passion she developed while taking Latin during her senior year.

Throughout high school, Gimenez has been actively involved in her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She attended seminary classes five days per week, received the Personal Progress Award for more than 100 hours of church service and earned the Honor Bee Award for over 40 hours of service to the Young Women’s program at her church.

She played on the SHS varsity girls tennis team and played with the Parks and Recreation Summer program. She is a member of NHS, World Language Honor Society, and the Key Club.

As she prepares for her move to Utah, she said she isn’t nervous for the next step. “I’ve always felt prepared for what’s coming,” she said.

Gimenez said she was driven to give her parents “the success and good grades they deserve after all they’d invested in her success.” She said that she received a lot of support at home and at school.

“The teachers are involved, welcoming, and accepting,” said Gimenez about her time at SHS. “It really shaped what I want to do in my career. If I’ve ever needed help, I’ve always received it with open arms.”

As they finished recalling their favorite activities, most supportive teachers, and hardest assignments, the students were eager to rush off to use the remainder of their free period to continue working on one final essay. All three students will deliver speeches at the SHS graduation ceremony on June 10.

Cancer survivors, fighters, and their supporters gathered at Southington High School (SHS) this weekend to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The 19th annual Relay for Life drew over 1,200 Southington residents, raising more than $100,000 for cancer research.

The event was held on the SHS athletic field on June 3-4, with 300 more participants attending than last year.

Michele Burge, community manager for the Southington relay, said the relay’s “whole event leadership team was extremely happy with the turnout, and the spirit of ‘Relay’ was definitely in the event.”

Participants were invited to walk the track as individuals or in teams, while tents set up on the turf offered activities, crafts, entertainment, and fundraising. Surrounding the track were hundreds of white bags, some with names written on them, holding candles that were lit for the luminaria event on Friday evening.

When the candles were lit, survivors and their caretakers were invited to take a lap around the track, as spectators showed their support for their fight.

In addition to 1,200 participants, Burge said the community support was key to their success this year. Representatives from the local Target and Home Depot provided generous donations and dedicated their time volunteering at the luminaria and registration tents. The Southington Fire Department stayed the weekend to show their support and helped event volunteers with setting up for the big crowds.

While the relay weekend raised over $100,000, Burge said they still have a lot of fundraising left to do. All funds are donated to the American Cancer Society to finance research, provide free information and services for individuals with cancer, and to support prevention and education programs.

“Cancer doesn’t stop after Relay is over, so our community definitely doesn’t stop fighting back to end cancer after Relay is over either,” said Burge.

The Southington Chapter of UNICO National held their 71st annual Top 25 Students Dinner at the Aqua Turf on June 1, to recognize Southington High School’s top 25 graduating seniors from the Class of 2016.

Out of 467 soon-to-be-graduates of Southington High School (SHS), 25 were honored for their high class ranking by the Southington chapter of UNICO National.

The 71st annual Top 25 dinner took place at the Aqua Turf Club on June 1, celebrating the success of students who earned a top spot in the SHS Class of 2016.

The Top 25 academically ranked students represent only the top 5 percent of seniors, based on their GPA scores.  The annual event celebrates their success with a dinner for the students, their parents, and members of the SHS staff and faculty.

The top three students, Timothy Cocozza, Emily Maciejewski, and Natalia Gimenez will deliver speeches at the graduation ceremony on June 10. For the other 22 students, this dinner was a chance to celebrate what they’ve worked so hard to achieve.

“These kids have spent their high school careers working hard,” said SHS Principal Brian Stranieri. “This dinner is a tribute to the hard work they’ve put in.”

Adam Cormier, who ranks fourth in the class, said he “went into freshman year with the goal of being in the Top 20” and felt like his final ranking was a major accomplishment.

Cormier was involved with the French National Honor Society, Key Club, Yearbook Club, Cross Country team, and French Club during his time at SHS. He will attend the University of Connecticut (UConn) to major in actuarial science this fall.

For Jessica Howe, the UNICO event, itself, was a long-term goal. “I’ve always wanted to come to this dinner,” she said. “It’s something I’ve strived for.”

Howe started her freshman year with a rank of 26 and finished at No. 5. During her tenure at SHS, Howe earned varsity letters for soccer, indoor track, and outdoor track. This fall she will head to UConn to study mathematics.

UNICO member Joe Peccerillo, chair of the Top 25 dinner committee, said that these 25 students are not only at the top academically, but are also involved in their community and in many extracurricular activities.

“These are Southington’s up-and-coming young adults who will hopefully be carrying on our traditions” said Peccerillo. “They really represent what UNICO represents.”

UNICO’s motto is “service above self.” The organization focuses on community involvement and volunteer service for men and women of Italian heritage.

Superintendent of Schools Timothy Connellan said the Top 25 dinner has become a tradition that the students look forward to each year.

“One of the things that is really important is to celebrate the achievements of our students,” said Connellan. “The students who are here tonight are active in academics and pursue what interests them.”

The superintendent said the dinner, itself, is a tribute to how deeply the Southington community values education.

Southington’s top 25 are: TImothy Cocozza, Emily Maciejewski, Natalia Gimenez, Samantha Butlien, Anthony Cammuso, Victoria Castillo, Fizza Chaudhry, Jennifer Congdon, Adam Cormier, Jessica Gagnon, Anna Gerwig, Jessica Howe, Danielle Hughes, Jenny Johnson, Kayla Kavanagh, Laura Koba, Sarah Lamb, Sylwia Lewkowicz, Kristina Linehan, Niels Peschel, Alex Rasten, Brenna Sarantides, Steven Sokolowski, Alexander Statkevich, Joseph Zavorskas, and Angelina Zollo.

In her final moments as a Blue Knight senior, Emily Sargent stood before friends, family, and faculty to sing the national anthem at the Southington High School commencement ceremony on Friday, June 10. Just before the second verse of The Star-Spangled Banner, her microphone cut out.

Sargent kept singing, and turned to her classmates.

At first there was silence. Then the faint sound of Sargent continuing the anthem made its way to the crowded bleachers. Then, slowly, but surely, the volume grew, as the SHS class of 2016 joined their classmate in song.

Applause erupted on and off the field when the anthem finished, for students and faculty who sang along proudly.

“That is the image of the Class of 2016 that I will have in my mind forever,” said Board of Education Chairman Brian Goralski. “When they sang the national anthem, I saw the way they handled themselves with respect and class. I felt a level of respect I have never felt before.”

The ceremony celebrated 490 seniors becoming SHS alumni on Friday evening – flipping their tassels, posing for photos, and holding their diplomas proudly in the air. Before their much-anticipated commencement, a few students had the opportunity to share their advice and well wishes with fellow graduates.

SHS student body president Andrew Rogalski followed the anthem performance with a patriotic speech about what it means to be an American, and a Blue Knight.

“We don’t give up when things are wrong, instead we keep pushing forward to make them right once again, and that is a quality that makes me proud of my country, and even more so, the class of 2016,” said Rogalski.

He urged his classmates to leave SHS in pursuit of innovation and intelligence, and to tackle problems they encounter in their community, and their nation.

“We are the next generation of this country’s 240-year story, and now it’s our turn to write the next chapters,” said Rogalski. “The class of 2016 has the ability to mend all of the problems that we see before us.”

Class President Andrew Rogalski embraces his classmate, essayist Natalia Gimenez, at the podium between their speeches.

Class salutatorian Emily Maciejewski shared that although she learned a great deal at SHS, she hopes her classmates will move forward toward new experiences—whether it be college, entering the work force, or military service.

“While high school provides the springboard for the future, this should not be where we peak,” said Maciejewski. “While we will always be Blue Knights, high school is only the beginning.”

Following performances by the SHS band and chorus, the students also heard speeches from Goralski, Superintendent of Southington Public Schools Timothy Connellan, and their principal, Brian Stranieri.

Goralski said that, as he does each year, he turned to SHS students for inspiration for his graduation speech. This year, he met with an American Cultures class with students from all academic levels. When he asked these students to describe their class, he heard words like family, community, involved, respectful, united, strong, innovated, and proud.

One students’ word choice stuck out to him – ubiquitous. An adjective that means “present, appearing, or found everywhere.”

Goralski told the Class of 2016 to have a ubiquitous influence on the town, to remember Southington will always stand behind them, and to know that “the positive influence you have had on this community will be felt for years.”

SHSKnightsHeader (web)The Southington High School athletic department has announced the first practices for the fall sports teams along with suggestions for incoming freshmen and returning student-athletes.

In order for a student to compete in sports at Southington High School, athletes must submit a Sports Participation Permission form or parent permission form, the Concussion Education Plan & Consent form to be signed by both the parent and the student-athlete, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Education Plan consent form to be signed by both the parent and the athlete, and the State of Connecticut Department of Education Health Assessment Record to be completed by the athlete’s physician.

The health assessment record is only valid for 13 months. If the physical expires during the participating season, a new physical is required in order to continue participating at practices or games.

Forms are available on the Southington High School website or the nurse’s office at the high school or middle schools.

After the nurse receives the proper forms, she will present a yellow card to the student. The nurse’s hours for issuing yellow cards for fall sports will continue on weekdays through Friday, Aug. 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Coaches are instructed to prohibit anyone from practicing who has not submitted the properly completed forms. No student athlete will be able to participate in ANY practice without a yellow card.

The requirements are in place so that the Southington school system can provide a safe athletic experience for your child.

Call the Southington High School athletic office at (860) 628-3229, ext. 429, with any questions.

Southington High School (SHS) has created a new fifth year program for local special education students to better acclimate to real world experiences. Southington’s Transitional Education in Life Learning and Adult Responsibilities, better known as “STELLAR,” piloted on Sept. 1.

The program is a partnership between Southington Public Schools and Lincoln College of New England.

Beth Ozkan, coordinator of secondary special education for Southington schools, said that programs like these have been around, but it’s a unique program for Southington students.

“The program is designed for students with intellectual disabilities to work with people that are age appropriate,” Ozkan said.

A sign on the wall champions the new program.

In the past, special education students that need further assistance beyond the age of 18 remained in the high school until they turned 21. Now, STELLAR students meet at Lincoln College of New England every day, so that they are in a learning environment with students their own age.

The program is still staffed by SHS employees, but the college environment provides more opportunities for the fifth year students.

The seven enrolled students are taught by head teacher Jessica Monson, an SHS graduate and first-year teacher in the district. Monson worked with transitional students while getting her certification, and she said she was lucky to receive this job in her hometown.

“Having the opportunity at Lincoln College is wonderful,” she said.

Monson works alongside job coaches Susan King, Sherry Baum, Rhonda Meade, and John Myska. They work inside and out of the classroom with the students to give them hands-on experience with different volunteer outlets.

Also with them is Nancy Chiero, a recently retired SHS special education teacher who spends one full day each week with the class. Chiero helped Ozkan launch the program, and she signed on to work with the program after a long career in the district.

Southington’s STELLAR students are piloting a new fifth-year program at Lincoln College of New England.

Starting and ending their day at Lincoln, the class spends a lot of time in the community.  They exercise at the YMCA, volunteer with Bread For Life, Petco, and Shop Rite. They cook their own lunches twice a week in the kitchen at St. Paul’s Episcopal church.  They also learn valuable life skills such as finance when they go to Farmington Bank.

Lincoln occupational and physical therapy (OT/PT) students are required to log experience hours, and the STELLAR class is hoping to work with them to achieve that goal, while benefitting from the therapy.

Monson and the STELLAR staff said that they hope to connect with more programs on campus, even adding a “Best Pals” program, their own take on the international Best Buddies initiative.

“This is just the beginning,” Chiero said.  “We want to really immerse our kids there.”

Any local businesses interested in providing volunteer opportunities for the students can contact Jessica Monson at jmonson@southingtonschools.org.

Southington police have tracked down a Southington man for vandalizing the main entrance at Southington High School. Nicholas A. Dusza, 27, of Southington was issued a summons for loitering on school grounds and third degree criminal mischief.

The investigation began on Oct. 18, 2016 when a police officer was conducting an extra check at the high school at approximately 3:44 a.m. He observed a white male near the main school entrance, and later identified him as Dusza. The Southington man had allegedly thrown eggs and ketchup on and near the front entrance windows and surrounding grounds. Dusza, who appeared to be intoxicated, gave no explanation besides stating, he was “blowing off steam.”

He was given a court date of Oct. 31, 2016 at the Bristol Court.

Southington High School’s band members shuffled teams on and off the field between bursts of rain. They redirected them around puddles and held umbrellas while visiting bands scrambled to beat the rain at the annual Music of the Knight competition.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, members of the SHS marching band gracefully endured the weather all day, waiting for their chance to take the stage. Usually, it’s their easiest performance of the year at a USBands competition. The host team performance is typically just for show.

But this year, Southington officials decided to up the ante.

Color guard members string red lights into their hair to add to the spectacle of their show.

Color guard members string red lights into their hair to add to the spectacle of their show.

“This year, because we are the only division six here, I decided to compete,” said band director Sara Ossias. “The staff and I decided that it would be a good idea to put us in a good place for states next week.”

As it turned out, the Knights rose to the challenge, and Southington officials pulled out all the stops.

As it turned out, Mother Nature helped. By the time the Knights took the field, the lines were long and the rains were gone. Even the crowds began to turn out.

The color guard braided red lights through their hair to cast a mechanical aura on their ever-evolving routine, “Rise of the Machines,” and Southington came away with their best score of their undefeated season (93.45)

The competition was the one bright spot of the day as the event trudged through delays, rain showers, and competitions. The Knights had no control over the schedule; that was left up to officials from USBands. They pulled one of the breaks from the schedule, kept the competition moving between showers, and everyone got to compete.

“Cancelling is the worst case,” said USBands’ assistant event coordinator Chuck Williams.

Band Backer Joanne Kelleher said that there was no indoor contingency plan, so if the event couldn’t be held outside, it couldn’t happen at all. So, the Blue Knights rolled with the punches.

The Band Backers had over 150 volunteers working at the event to make it run smoothly, serving food at the concession stand, selling tickets and program books, hosting the visiting teams’ staff, guiding parking, and much more. They used the freshman cafeteria to serve all judges and band directors, totaling 213 people. Manor Inn donated the food, and the Band Backers made all of the desserts.

Rains kept the crowds away for most of the day.

Rains kept the crowds away for most of the day.

The annual competition serves as the biggest fundraiser for the band’s budget, which usually runs six figures. Costs accumulate throughout the season with uniforms, trucks to transport the equipment to competitions, travel expenses, and more.

Alongside ticket and concession sales, one of the biggest sources of income at the competition is the program guide. It is over 200 pages long and includes ads, pictures, a page for each competing band’s program, a complete roster for that day’s events, and USBands information.

Stephanie Vollaro is serving her seventh and final year on the program guide committee. She said that the books, which are only $3 to purchase, usually sell out every year and the money made from producing and selling them makes up one third of the band budget. It also serves a greater purpose for the students as well.

“It’s like a band yearbook for the kids, with all their photos in the front, and the different band sections,” Vollaro said. “It’s the only book produced that honors all of the kids that work really hard in the marching band.”

SHS hosted 23 bands during their home competition, which also featured DePaolo and Kennedy middle school bands during exhibition. During the competition, each band was allotted 15 minutes to get on the field, perform, and get off.

Southington band members and color guard escorted each team.

Despite the forecast, MOTK marched on as scheduled, which was a relief for everyone that took the time to plan it. Band Backer president Erik Semmel said that they prepare for this event for months.

“We have a bit of a system,” he said. “We’ve been doing it for 24 years.”

Now, the Knights will turn their attention back to competition as they march on to the state championship at Willowbrook Park in New Britain on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The band backers are already scheduling the trip to nationals at MetLife Stadium on Nov. 12.
