so-shs-marching-band-4

The Blue Knight marching band might have been competing in the smallest division at the New England States Championship at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in New Britain, but they were pitted against the biggest programs in the state.

Southington kicked off their postseason last weekend, out-performing four top programs to finish second in the state for Class 6. The Blue Knights were edged by Trumbull (95.338) but posted their highest score of the year (95.025) to kick off the postseason.

Southington was awarded “Best Music” for their show, titled “Rise of the Machine.”

Up next, the Knights will take on the northeast on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the USBands New England Regional Championship in Bridgeport. The locals will get another shot at Trumbull, along with Norwalk High School and John P. Stevens High School from North Edison, N.J.

SHS students get a hand-on lesson about government

Last week, many students were seen at the Town Council, Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC), and Board of Education (BOE) meetings. With pens scribbling across notebooks, they tried to make heads or tails out of the process.

This is because Southington High School teacher Daniel Hart found a creative way to educate his freshmen students about local government.

The ninth graders in his honors civics class were told to attend a government meeting and take notes that would be used for two separate writing pieces. The first was a factual piece about what happened at the meeting, what was discussed, any votes that were taken, etc. The second was an editorial with their opinion on the government officials they observed and the actions that occurred during the meeting.

“Students develop their own headlines and bylines, and create articles that look authentic,” Hart said.

Hart said that the project has been an immediate success. His purpose was to have students engage in the government and act like journalists.

“Since students learn about government and citizenship, what better way than to actually observe it or be a part of it,” said Hart.

The freshman civics course is a graduation requirement, but in future years it will be offered to only the juniors.

Leaders of the town meetings were very receptive to the student attendance and made them feel welcome. Town Council chair Michael Riccio welcomed Hart’s class at the meeting’s open, recognizing the number of kids in the audience.

PZC chair Mike DelSanto invited the students to introduce themselves and state why they were present, followed by having them lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

“Thank Mr. Hart,” DelSanto told the students. “This is important. You should know what’s going on in your town.”

BOE chair Brian Goralski recalled his days in the SHS civics class, when fellow BOE member Bob Brown was the teacher.

“You never know when a civics class is going to lead to your future,” Goralski said at the meeting. “The very class that prompts you all to be here—my teacher is four people away from me, and we sit up here serving our community together.”

When the project is finished, Hart’s class will discuss some of the town’s main initiatives, because most of the students choose local town meetings to attend. In recent years, he had officials come in and speak to the students.

“The project is authentic,” said Hart. “Civics students at Southington High School have been doing this for more than five years now.”

STAFF WRITER

Filling in the gaps for the Lady Knight basketball team’s starting lineup is the dilemma that Southington coach Mike Forgione will be faced with this season.

“It’s going to be a challenge,” said the coach, who’s entering his 14th season as a head coach and seventh with the Knights. “I’ve probably never had a challenge like this one before. This is one of my biggest challenges to get these kids ready to play.”

Forgione has some talented players returning to the team, but he also had some important holes left by graduation. Southington will start the season with some questions that will need to be answered.

“We’re going to be inexperience, but the three players we got back are players,” said Forgione. “We’re going to have one of the better backcourts, I think. It’s just that we have to find kids with no varsity experience to fill the other roles. And with our schedule, I would say that it’s the hardest in the CCC.”

This isn’t the first time that Forgione has dealt with filling in the gaps. Because the Knights haven’t had a ton of depth in recent years, this conundrum seems to be a reoccurring theme, and it’s something that Forgione said will be the key to Southington’s success.

“I’m putting the freshmen and sophomores that are going to have to fill those gaps in an unfair position,” the coach said. “They really shouldn’t be thrown into what I’m having them do, based on our schedule. But I have to be patient. They are a talented group. They are committed and dedicated, and they want to learn and get better. Even though I’m putting them in this unfair position, I think they will respond.”

Southington finished the 2015-16 regular season at 17-3 overall and shared the CCC Central Blue title between Conard and Glastonbury with a 6-2 divisional record. It was the first time since 1997 that the Knights had won the divisional title.

Southington entered the postseason as the No. 3 seed in the CCC tournament. Following a pair of double digit home wins over No. 14 Middletown and No. 6 Weaver, the Knights advanced to the semifinals for the second-straight year, until their conference run came to an end in a 66-62 overtime loss to No. 2 EO Smith at Glastonbury High School.

The Panthers went on to claim their first ever CCC title by defeating top-seeded South Windsor, 81-68, in the final.

Southington qualified for the Class LL tournament for the 16th-consecutive year and advanced to the second round as the No. 7 seed with a 62-51 victory over No. 26 Norwalk at home in the first round. The Knights ended their season after falling to No. 10 Greenwich at home, 56-52. Greenwich later met up with No. 4 Stamford in the Class LL title game, where they fell short to the Black Knights, 50-45.

“Battling all the way to the end with Greenwich and only losing by five was a great year for the kids,” said Forgione. “I think we were real exciting, and the community really got behind us.”

Southington lost three seniors to graduation, including starting forward, Natalie Wadolowski. As a three-time all-league player and four-year starter, Wadolowski led the team last year in rebounds (254, 10.2 per game), steals (83, 3.3 per game), and blocks (30, 1.2 per game).

“We had a core group of seven last year, and we’re only down to three now,” the coach said. “Three of the seven were seniors. Natalie was a great presence in that post position, and is someone that is going to be huge to replace.”

The Knights will also be without junior starting point guard, Sarah Minkiewicz. Minkiewicz was the team’s fourth-leading scorer and started in 25 games, averaging over 26 and a half minutes last year.

“She decided not to play this year,” said Forgione. “She’s someone that was a big part of what we did last year. She was a presence, not only at the point guard, but at the wing as well. She was probably one of our best defensive players. It was a huge loss to our program.”

Senior guard, Maggie Meehan, was chosen to the lead the Knights this season as the team’s lone captain and senior. Meehan had the hot hand from beyond the arc last year, leading the team in three pointers (34-for-118). Meehan also averaged the most minutes on the court for the Knights as the team’s second-leading scorer (308 points).

Other key returning players include juniors Janette Wadolowski (guard), Hartlee Meier (forward); and sophomores Diane Williams (forward) and Kristen Longley (guard). As a two-time all-league player, Wadolowski was an all-around scorer for the Knights last year, leading the team in free throws (82-for-112)—shooting 73.2 percent from the charity stripe—two-point field goals (170-for-338), total field goals (178-for-369), and total points (446, 17.8 per game).

Other players that will look to compete for starting positions on the varsity team include sophomore Hailey Morelli (guard); and freshmen Madison Hulten (freshman), Katie D’Agostino (guard/forward), Megan Mikosz (forward), Brianna Harris (guard), Mackenzie Coppola (guard), Taylor Starr (guard/forward), and Callie Gendron (forward).

Forgione has never had that true, lengthy center in the paint during his tenure at Southington, but that has never an issue. Similar to last year, the backcourt will be the strength of the Knights again.

“I would put that backcourt against anyone in the area,” the coach said. “Our one senior and two juniors are college-level players. We may only have three, but I have three good ones.”

The style of play on the court will not be any different either, which is built on pure speed.

“We’re going to play our style,” said Forgione. “We’re going to push the ball up the floor. We’re going to be exciting and aggressive. We’re going to attack the basket and play full-court defense, dictating the pace of the game. Let’s take it to them, rather than have the other team dictate it to us.”

Looking at the regular season schedule, the Knights will be playing a new crossover schedule, which features games against divisional winners, Rocky Hill, Tolland, South Windsor, and Wethersfield. Cheshire and Suffield are the two non-conference games on their schedule.

Will they be ready to run? They always are.

Training for Tomorrow links students to local businesses

Lincoln College admissions officer Shauna Judd addresses students during a Training for Tomorrow seminar at the high school.

The Southington Chamber of Commerce gave its annual presentation at Southington High School (SHS) for the Training for Tomorrow (T4T) program on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The program is a partnership between the chamber and the high school where students have a chance to job shadow or intern with a local business.

Being connected to the businesses in town allows the chamber to network with them to provide a hands-on experience free of cost. The alliance is called “Training for Tomorrow” because it trains sophomores and juniors to build a resume, make business connections, and get work experience.

With the help of SHS faculty Lisa Carmody and Candace Patten, along with Southington chamber members, students get a jump start on their career and college planning while learning valuable skills in the field.

Chamber board chair Dave Pestillo told the students that it’s the same concept as test driving a car before you buy it.

“You wouldn’t want to just start something and not know what you’re getting in to, and that’s what this program is about,” he said.

The program was designed to give high school students a sampling of different careers, so that they can save time and money in the future. By shadowing professionals and asking questions, students can gauge whether or not they see it as a fit.

Along with Pestillo, Shirene Hazel represented the chamber board at the presentation. She emphasized the importance of volunteer and internship experience in the competitive workforce and college application process.

“Understand that colleges are going to ask you, ‘what have you done,’” said Hazel, “and attending high school is what everyone has done.”

Lincoln College admissions officer Shauna Judd attended the lecture as well to give students perspective from someone that reviews applications. She explained that resumes with internships on them are beneficial to admissions counselors so they know how to direct a student to the proper major.

“Having an idea will help not only you, but the school and an admissions representative,” Judd said.

The internship programs can be as little as one day or as long as a nine week experience, depending on the business. It is available to the sophomore and junior classes as they begin to look into college programs and is completely free.

Students receive no monetary compensation for their time, but they learn priceless values.

“If you do really well in this internship it could lead to a really good reference that you could use later on,” Carmody said. “No you don’t get paid, but there are more things in it than just money.”

Southington officer goes back to school

Southington’s Student Resource Officer Kevin Naranjo, above, helps keep the hallways safe at SHS. The former student is the first to serve a four-year term.

By JEN CARDINES

STAFF WRITER

Officer Kevin Naranjo spends his days roaming the hallways of Southington High School (SHS) actively involved in all aspects of the institution. He is part counselor, friend, parent, police officer, and teacher. He’s the doorway to so many different routes that students can take. He is the Student Resource Officer (SRO).

An SHS graduate himself, Naranjo has been with the Southington Police Department for five years following his four and a half year run with the Farmington squad. This is his first year as a resource officer, and the first time that the contract spans four years.

In the past, SROs were assigned for two or three years, but beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, the contracts run for four, allowing the officer to see a graduating class all the way through.

The program was spearheaded in the fall of 1997 from the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant, which paid for 75 percent of the officer’s salary. SPD Deputy Chief Palmieri said that the first Southington SRO was Gerry Triano, and there have been seven more since then. “It’s a phenomenal program,” Palmieri said. “It’s allowed us to bring law enforcement and develop a positive relationship in the school. The SRO is very visible.”

Naranjo walks through the school between each class period, stops in the cafeteria during lunch waves, stands outside for bus duty, and always has his door open for students.

“The more they get to see me, the more comfortable they’ll feel with me, and the more comfortable they’ll feel when they have to come to me with a problem,” he said. “I’m not here just for problems. I have a candy jar, but it’s empty right now, which tells you how many kids pop in here to just to say hello and have a candy.”

SHS is the eighth largest high school in Connecticut with approximately 2,100 students in the building. That can sometimes stretch the SRO pretty thin.

“There’s only one of me,” Naranjo said with a laugh. “It’s such a big building. There are so many doors and hallways you’ve got to spend a portion of your day walking, so that you know it.”

Naranjo said he enjoys the time he spends visiting every nook and cranny of the school.

On special occasions, he gets in front of a class to teach different subjects. The civics class benefitted from his law enforcement expertise when he spoke about officers wearing body cams and the legality of it. He’s given lectures to classes about what being an officer entails, and the different steps it takes to get there.

Naranjo even stops into the Spanish classes because he is bilingual. “I went to the Spanish class and actually talked them in Spanish. I showed them the importance of being bilingual.”

While he sees many positive elements in the school, there are times when Naranjo has to take action as a law enforcer. As one of the largest high schools in the state, SHS is “a little community in and of itself,” SPD Chief John Daly said.

“The SRO is there to de-escalate situations, which is much faster than if they’d have to call someone in,” said Daly.

When conflict breaks out between class periods, when an accident happens in the parking lot, when a legal issue arises, Naranjo is on the scene. His office even overlooks the entire property front, enabling him to monitor the premises for suspicious entries or loitering students.

“My office is pretty fully stocked,” the SRO said. “I have all the equipment I need.”

The computer is directly connected to the PD with all of the applications so he can do everything he needs right from his high school desk.

“It’s almost like a substation,” Naranjo said. “Some officers will even stop in to either look something up or grab something, so they can kind of utilize this as a substation even when there’s no school. They can always stop in here and stay active on the radio.”

While his full-time job is being a resource officer, his work doesn’t stop when school is out of session. Naranjo will be on the road back on patrol during the upcoming holiday break, and the same goes for summer vacations.

“It’s nice because I can see the kids inside, and if there’s issues with them outside I’ll know them,” he said. “And I can talk to them.”

Toy drive at SHS raises donations for Community Services

A holiday sign greeted students to the high school cafeteria in December during a school toy drive for community services.

By JEN CARDINES

STAFF WRITER

Southington High School (SHS) juniors Gabriella Bassi-Belanger and Nikki Belales showed their true holiday spirit this year by organizing a cultural project and toy drive.

A large poster wall was placed in the cafeteria that educates students and staff about what different cultures celebrate at SHS and across the world this time of year. The wall includes Hanukkah, Kwanza, and Christmas, with dates and information about each holiday.

While the idea was spearheaded by Bassi-Belanger, Belales was right by her side to help construct the board and collect materials. A toy drive was open throughout December for anyone in the building to donate and everything went directly to Southington Community Services (SCS).

“This is the second year that they’ve approached me to do some type of cultural holiday theme at Southington High School,” said principal Brian Stranieri. “Last year it started with the Thanksgiving food drive, and then I challenged them to take it a little further for the holidays.”

Bassi-Belanger said that this year she wanted the focus to be on the Southington community.

“Last year, we collected maybe 100 coloring books and materials for the Children’s Hospital, but this year, we wanted to go a little bit more local,” she said.

The girls contacted Southington Youth Services counselor Sue Williams when they started the project, hoping she could help them get in touch with the right contacts.

“I didn’t have to do much,” Williams said. “The girls organized everything, and I just got them in touch with SCS.”

Stranieri sent an email to all faculty members, encouraging them to donate, and the toy drive was mentioned during the morning announcements in the days leading up to the holiday break. Inside the school’s main office, collection boxes accumulated coloring books, crayons, games and toys to send to families in need.

When the boxes were donated on Friday, Dec. 22, the items counted were double what the girls expected.

Williams called the drive a big success. “Gabriella is a student that is so giving, and is just always thinking about other people, whether it’s patients or our community,” she said about the efforts.

“I’m so proud of what they’re doing,” Stranieri said. “We have great young people in this building, and this is a fine example of what our young adults can do if they put their mind to it. They understand that it’s better to give than to receive.”

Even with the holiday season nearly complete, Southington Community Services is still accepting donations. Contact them at (860) 628-3761 or drop in at 91 Norton St. in Plantsville.

Despite the winter vacation, the Southington High School (SHS) cafeteria was bustling with people on Thursday night, Dec. 29. A group of 16 Costa Rican students and two of their teachers traveled to Southington as part of a foreign exchange program, which kicked off with a welcome dinner for all parties involved.

The exchange students were greeted by SHS staff, town officials, and host families at the dinner. Town Manager Garry Brumback championed the program, saying that he was a huge proponent of the value of diversity.

“It’s an opportunity for us to share, it’s an opportunity for us to show off, and it’s an opportunity for us to learn a different perspective from people who come from a completely different culture,” said Brumback.

Board of Education chair Brian Goralski also spoke to the crowd. “We’re proud of what we do in our schools, but we can’t replicate anything that you could bring to us culturally,” he said. “Thank you for choosing Southington, I’m glad you’re with us.”

Spearheaded by foreign language teacher Teresa Curtis, the program is the first full exchange—where both groups travel to each others’ country—done at SHS.

“It’s been a goal for me professionally since I started working here,” Curtis said. “I recognize as a language teacher the importance of giving an immersive experience and exposing my students to the culture.

The Costa Rican students came from San Agustín High School, where everyone is a bi-lingual learner. They begin learning the English language at age four, so by adolescence they are fluent speakers. San Agustín English teacher Luis Miguel runs the conversations class, where students are told to just speak, interact, and play games in English to reinforce the language.

Like some of his students, this was Miguel’s first time in the United States. Just the brief dusting of snow flurries caused excitement for them because it’s something they can’t see in their country.

“Costa Rica has only two seasons: rainy and dry,” Miguel said. “The temperature is always warm all year.”

Southington students were each paired up with a Costa Rican student to spend time with during the visit.

World Language department chair Tina Riccio said that the program was open to sophomores and juniors. At San Agustín, the high school ranges from grades 7 to 11, so many of the students were younger than their Southington partners.

Curtis said that during the two-week stay, there are family days, excursion days, and school days. The whole group traveled to the cities of New York City, Boston, New Haven, and Hartford, and they had an afternoon at Powder Ridge for snow tubing.

Family days allowed the exchange students to spend time with his or her host family and do anything they wanted. During the school days, the Costa Rican students followed their Southington counterpart to all of their classes and got to experience the American classroom setting.

When the SHS students go to Costa Rica in July, school will still be in session. The Costa Rican school year begins when the students fly back home, so that enabled them to come here without missing classes.

After two years of planning, the Costa Rican Education Exchange was finally able to happen for Southington students and families. SHS English teacher Chris Cavalho and Curtis will lead the children on the July trip to Costa Rica in order to complete the exchange.

U.S. News ranks SHS among the nation’s best schools

Students celebrate at last year’s graduation ceremony. Now, U.S News join the celebration, ranking Southington High School among the top high schools in the state and the nation.

By JEN CARDINES

STAFF WRITER

Southington High School (SHS) was ranked by U.S. News as the 38th best high school in Connecticut for 2016 after receiving a silver medal on the national level.

All schools that were ranked gold or silver nationally were numerically ranked in their states based on their position in the national category. Nationally, Southington was 1,819 out of nearly 20,000 schools, so they fell in the silver medal category.

In April, Chief data strategist Robert Morse explained the ranking process in a report on the U.S News website, providing all of the details and information about the procedure.

He said that 2016 was the first year that graduation rates were a deciding factor. High schools “now have to meet or exceed a national standard high school graduation rate to be considered top-performing schools and to be ranked at a national level,” the report stated.

SHS measured up to the new criteria with great success. In order to pass step three (meeting/surpassing a basic benchmark for graduation rate) schools had to have a graduation rate of 68 percent, but Southington came in at 94 percent, near perfection.

Board of Education chair Brian Goralski said that the district has always had an outstanding graduation rate, and one year it was 100 percent.

A stipulation for their silver medal honor was having a college readiness index (CRI) of 20.17 or better. SHS had a 30.1. The CRI is a measurement of students that took and passed Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) tests.

SHS had about 30 percent of its students receive college credit before graduating high school, and 78 percent of the students who took AP tests passed.

U.S. News used data from the 2013-2014 school year when making these decisions, meaning that changes could have already occurred in the ranking high schools.

“We’re already pretty far down the road,” said Superintendent Timothy Connellan. “We’ve already increased our AP class offerings.”

With nearly 2,100 students, SHS is the eighth largest high school in the state, and they put up impressive numbers in core subject proficiency. The math and English proficiency rate is 93 percent for Southington students, surpassing the state standards by 13 percent.

“As we start the budget season, it really shows that we spend the money responsibly and get good outcomes,” Goralski said.

“We’re always happy to hear that people think we are doing a good job,” Connellan said, “But we’re more in tune with how we think we’re doing.”
