The Southington Public School district is one of 433 school districts in the United States and Canada that are being honored by the College Board. Southington High School student achievement ranked high enough to be placed on the seventh annual Advanced Placement (AP) District Honor Roll.

Southington High School increased the number of students participating in the rigorous AP coursework and examinations, while increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of 3.0 or higher.

“Reaching these goals shows that the district is successfully identifying, motivating, and academically preparing students to be ready for college and university level coursework,” school officials said in a press release. “The Southington Public School District is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses for motivated students of all backgrounds.”

Inclusion on the honor roll is based on a review of three years of data, from 2014 to 2016. The review focuses on 37 AP exams, including world language and culture. Selection was based on the following criteria:

Increased participation or access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts;

Increased or maintained percentage of exams taken by black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students who scored 3.0 or more on at least one AP Exam; and

Improvement or maintenance of performance levels when comparing the 2016 percentage of students scoring a 3.0 or higher to the 2014 percentage, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students earn a 3.0 or higher.

The complete honor can be found on the College Board website at www.collegeboard.org.

Southington UNICO announced that the Southington High School Unified Sports Team has been recognized as a Unified Banner Champion School. This is a national award sponsored by Special Olympics International.

The Southington Board of Education recognized the program during the Jan. 12 board meeting and presented the team with a certificate of excellence.

The Unified Sports Team is fully funded by Southington UNICO and has been one of the organization’s key initiatives for five years.

“The program truly embodies the UNICO mantra of service to fellow man and community in addition to being a charitable educational project,” UNICO officials said in a press release.

According to Special Olympics International, Unified Champion Schools have an inclusive school climate and exude a sense of collaboration, engagement and respect for all members of the student body and staff. A Banner Unified Champion School is one that has demonstrated commitment to inclusion by fully adopting the three components including: Special Olympics Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement.

The SHS Unified Sports Team is now one of only 32 programs in the country to have received this recognition.

“We would like to thank all of the members of UNICO for your support. Thank you for allowing us to do what we do and for allowing the athletes and partners of all our teams to be a part of something so special,” said Unified Sports Team Coaches, Marguerite Maddalena, Denise Ingriselli and Andrew Larkin in a letter to Southington UNICO.

Officials from Southington UNICO also highlighted high school’s Unified Theater program.

Southington UNICO is comprised of more than 80 members and is a service-oriented organization that was established in 1944. The club distributes about $30,000 to local and national charities and initiatives. Learn more at www.SouthingtonUNICO.com

Track records fall at the East Coast Invitational meet

The success continued for Southington’s indoor track and field team when they traveled to Providence, R.I. to compete in the sixth annual East Coast Invitational at the Providence Career and Technical High School. The Knights qualified four more athletes in three new events for the Class LL meet, breaking three school records in the process.

“I’m trying to expose the kids to different, new places, and it worked out great,” said Southington coach Dan Dachelet. “It’s a phenomenal facility. It’s kind of set up like New Haven, except they have a lot more seating that can see particular events. But I liked it.”

The meet was held from Friday, Jan. 13 to Saturday, Jan. 14 and included schools from New England, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Delaware.

“Originally, this meet came on our radar because we wanted to get Amanda (Howe) in the meet,” the coach said. “It was a great opportunity to do the shot put and weight throw. As we’re trying to decide which meets to do during the season, this meet looked like a really great opportunity to compete against top-notch, regional-caliber athletes.”

Tyler Cyr finished 13th (6.9) in the preliminaries of the 55m dash and qualified for the state meet. He also teamed up with Ian Agnew, Casey Selinske, and Kolby Rogers to take 13th (1:39.97) in the 4x200m relay and qualify for the state meet in his second event of the day.

According to the CIAC, times in the 400m and 800m did not count towards qualifying for the postseason in this particular meet. But that didn’t slow down Tyson Harris. He broke a school record (53.95) by finishing sixth (53.4) in the 400m, which was set by Ben Gibbons during the 2012-13 season. Harris also improved his state-qualifying time by leaping into ninth (20’6.25”) in the long jump.

Kate Kemnitz ran in the 800m, but restricted qualifying standards didn’t hamper her morale either. She finished 11th (2:31.09) and broke her own school record (2:31.53) that she set last season at the Yale Interscholastic Track and Field Classic.

Records continued to fall when Catherine Myers finished 12th (13:12.74) in the two-mile race.

“She’s an awesome kid, one of the top in her class, a class president, and team captain,” said Dachelet. “You’re just happy that she gets to leave a legacy like that.”

Myers was the first Southington female athlete to set the record in the event.

“It’s never run in Connecticut,” the coach said. “The one meet where they ran it in Connecticut was an elite field. We had a handful of guys that ran it, but from what I researched, never had a girl run that race.”

Agnew improved his state-qualifying mark in the long jump as well, finishing four spots behind Harris in 13th (20’2”). Zachary Burleigh improved his state-qualifying mark after propelling into seventh (11’) in the pole vault.

The girls team added two more relays to their lineup at the state meet. Tayler Riddick, Samantha Przybylski, Rylee Van Epps, and Natalie Verderame qualified by taking 24th (1:57.56) in the 4x200m relay. Verderame also connected with Kemnitz, Allison Brown, and Marissa Matthews to take 14th (4:31.54) in the 4x400m relay and qualify as well.

Adeline Kilgore and Przybylski tag-teamed their entry to the postseason while tearing up the track in short distance, as both sprinters qualified for the state meet in the 55m dash. Kilgore finished 50th (8.0), and Przybylski trailed four hundredths of a second in 57th (8.04).

Howe finished as runner-up (39’11”) to Brittany Jones (45’) of Bloomfield in the shot put, improving her state-qualifying mark by 31 inches.

“I wouldn’t say that it’s a throw-centric meet, but Rhode Island is a throw-centric state,” said Dachelet. “They’re one of the few states to offer the weight throw and hammer throw. They had two shot put circles going, and it was just amazing to watch the number of kids that participated in the event.”

Megan Biscoglio also finished as runner-up, taking second (9’6”) in the pole vault.

Currently, Southington has 12 Blue Knights qualified in seven out of 15 events and 12 Lady Knights qualified in 11 out of 15 events for the state meet.

“The student-athletes are raising the bar,” the coach said. “This is just a product of the new culture on the team. The goal is to be a balanced program with depth, being competitive across the board. We’re trying to develop and grow as a program, and we’re not going to stop until we rewrite the records books and come into our own as a program.”

Southington will look to qualify more athletes for the state meet this week when they compete at the Glastonbury developmental meet on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and travel to Hillhouse High School in New Haven on Saturday, Jan. 21 for the SCC Coaches Invitational.

Caleb Brick wraps up his opponent during a 49-21 win over Platt.

The Blue Knight wrestling team remained undefeated in conference meets with their eighth win of the season. Southington continued to show the CCC who is boss with a 49-21 home victory over Platt on Wednesday, Jan. 11 before heading out to New York for an all-star wrestling tournament on the weekend.

“It was a good win for us,” said Southington coach Derek Dion. “We obviously have to work on our cardiovascular shape. I think we were bringing it a little too hard. We have to work on our technique and individual technique for the kids, just trying to get better every week.”

Rich Rivera (220), Jacob Cardozo (113), Shaun Wagner (132), Tagan Welch (138), and Cole Brock (182) all landed pins in the match. Cardozo scored the fastest pin at 1:43 into his bout. Billy Carr (160) clinched the win for the Knights with a 7-4 decision over his opponent.

Southington improved to 8-1 overall.

“Every single one of those kids is tough,” said Dion. “They don’t have a kid that’s not going to give you an effort out there. They make every single guy wrestle. I’ve been looking to this match all year, and this is the best we’ve seen thus far in the weekday dual meets.”

The Panthers moved their 160-pound wrestler, Ben Stratton, up to wrestle at 170. Dion chased and moved Calo up to wrestle Stratton at 170.

“I really wanted that matchup,” the coach said. “I know that Stratton is a really good wrestler, and it’s good for both of them and everyone that came. They both wrestled tough and got better. Carr is a varsity wrestler now anyway, so basically my plan for the year is to bump Calo up to a tougher kid if I can.”

Eastern States Classic

JAN. 14—A few days later, the Knights traveled to the SUNY Sullivan Community College in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y., where they broke the top 100 at the Eastern States Classic. The all-star tournament pits top high school contenders in a 156-team bracket.

Austin Abacherli (145), Caleb Brick (99), Jacob Cardozo (113), Paul Calo (152), Richie Rivera (220), and Welch (132) represented Southington.

Abacherli, Calo, and Welch were the only Knights to advance past the first round of their weight classes in the championship bracket. Rivera advanced to the first round of eight in the consolation bracket. Abacherli and Calo advanced to the second round of 16 in the consolation bracket.

New York teams swept the top three spots with Long Beach (134 points) eclipsing Hilton (100) and Mattituck (96.5) for the overall title.

The Knights will look to stay strong this week when they host Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and travel to Plaistow, N.H. to wrestle in the Timberlane Tournament in Plaistow, NH on Saturday, Jan. 21.

On Friday, Jan. 13, the Blue Knight swimming and diving team scored their second win of the season with a 91-70 victory over East Catholic at the Southington YMCA. The Knights went to exhibition races mid-way through the second relay.

Even though it’s only the second meet of the long, arduous regular season, Southington coach Evan Tuttle said that he is very impressed with what he has seen thus far.

“Even though it’s early, we’ve already proven a lot,” the coach said. “It’s not just what we’re capable of doing in the pool with a diverse range of ability. Many of the athletes are thrown in any event and excel. But more so than that, their energy, character, and integrity are above and beyond as well. The sportsmanship is key in my opinion.”

You can go through the season and run the table, winning every single meet. But if you didn’t do it in the right way, you didn’t win a thing, according to Tuttle.

“We’ve got two goals: to get those wins on paper, but also to get those internal wins as well,” said Tuttle. “You have to do it in the right way, and we’re two for two in that category in my opinion so far this season.”

Southington clinched the meet with more than three events remaining and came away with first-place finishes in all 11 events.

Evan Bender, Brendon Egan, PJ Ramsey, and Derek Melanson set the pace with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:51.63). Blake, Melanson, Ramsey, and Ben Wakefield clinched the win with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40). Heidgerd, Melanson, Wakefield, and Bender capped the contest with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.89).

Tyler Heidgerd was a double-winner in the 200 freestyle (1:57.12) and 100 freestyle (52.88). Brendon Egan captured the 200 individual medley (2:09.64) and the 100 backstroke (58.78). Zack Blake was a double-winner in the 50 freestyle (23.78) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.16).

Derek Melanson won the title in the 100 fly (59.18), and Brian Egan scored a win in the 500 freestyle.

“The expectations are high,” said Tuttle. “What’s more is that I think the kids are ready to rise to those expectations. They want to be the team to beat, and they’ve embraced that role. When we get into the heart of our schedule and conference, being strong mentally is going to be vital to winning those meets that are going to come down to the wire.”

Brendon Egan qualified for the Class LL meet in the 200 individual medley.

“He really made it look effortless in that IM,” the coach said. “He went out nice and long and controlled his pace. He can drop the floor on that one a little more.”

Egan qualified for the state meet in the 100 backstroke as well.

“The pacing was a little off in the backstroke,” said Tuttle. “We have to get him to lengthen out the first 50 a little more and give himself a little more gas at the end. It’s room for improvement, but he’s in at an auto-cut and is good to go.”

The Knights will be back in the pool next week when they swim against Avon at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and remain out on the road at East Hartford on Friday, Jan. 20.

Madison Hulten fights for a layup during a loss to Conard.

Inexperience might have caught up to the Lady Knight basketball team after they dropped two of three games this past week, but Southington coach Mike Forgione said that the younger players are starting to understand what it takes to compete at a high level.

The coach said he hopes what they learned from the first half of the season will help carry the momentum down the stretch.

“You can talk about it and try to drill it in them at practice, but until you experience it, you can’t really understand it,” the coach said. “Starting three freshmen, they’re not used to being in this role and didn’t expect to be in this role when the season started. I bet that all three would have been excited just to be on the varsity bench. Now they’re playing 30 minutes a night.”

Loss at Hall

JAN. 9—The Knights began the week on the road in West Hartford and fell, 71-56, at Hall on Monday. Hall is ninth in Class LL and fourth in the CCC.

The Warriors outscored the Knights, 30-16, in the second and third quarters combined. Maggie Meehan (6 rebounds, 3 assists) paced the offense with 23 points and went 14-for-14 from the foul line. Hartlee Meier (8 rebounds, 3 steals) backed Meehan with 15 points on a pair of three-pointers. Brianna Harris contributed with 11 points. Madison Hulten grabbed nine rebounds.

Loss vs. Conard

JAN 12—Southington suffered their fifth loss of the season after falling, 56-50, to Conard at home a few days later. Conard is fourth in Class LL and second behind undefeated Enfield in the CCC.

“To play a team that was 9-1 coming in, whose only loss was to Glastonbury by a point, I thought the kids battled for four quarters against an experienced team with a lot of depth,” said Forgione. I was really proud of our effort. You’re always disappointed when you lose, but with what we’re working with and going up against, I thought that we gave Conard all they could handle and more.”

The Chieftains led, 28-23, at halftime, but the Knights came as close as three points down late in the fourth quarter. Meehan (5 rebounds, 5 steals) marshaled the offense with 20 points and went 5-for-6 from the foul line. Harris backed Meehan with 12 points. Hartlee Meier (5 rebounds, 2 assists) contributed with 10 points on a triad of three-pointers. Hulten (2 blocks) secured 7 boards.

Win at Wethersfield

JAN. 14—The Knights wrapped up the week by ending their three-game losing streak with a four-point victory, 51-48, at Wethersfield (6-5) on Saturday.

“It was a good road win,” said Forgione. “There’s a team that has a lot of experience with a lot of upperclassmen. Their best player is probably Nicole Gwynn. She’s very athletic and is only a freshman.”

Both teams put up 24 points in the second half, but Southington outscored Wethersfield, 27-24, in the first half.

“They have two types of teams,” the coach said. “They almost start a five-guard offense that is very experienced and athletic. Then they bring in two six-one girls and a five-11 girl. They have a run-and-jump type of team, and then they can bring in these big girls off the bench.”

Meehan (5 assists, 4 rebounds) dropped 24 points on a pair of three-pointers and went 10-for-15 from the foul line. Meier (7 rebounds, 2 steals) backed Meehan with 14 points on three jumpers from beyond the arc. Harris (3 rebounds, 3 steals) contributed with 12 points. Hulten controlled the glass with eight rebounds.

“We made some big plays,” the coach said. “Hartlee hit some big shots, and Bri Harris really started to contribute on the offensive end. Maggie did her usual thing of leading by example in how hard she plays, controlling the game with the ball in her hands.”

Wethersfield went 5-for-15 (33.3 %) from the foul line and made just one three-pointer out of 12 attempts.

The Knights will look to stay in postseason contention this week when they host South Windsor (4-5) in their lone game of the week on Friday, Jan. 20.

With the losses, Southington fell to 5-5.

The turning point: Knights sparked by 3-game streak

Brendan Taylor looks for an opening during a 40-37 win over Bristol Eastern. With a 3-game winning streak, the boys are back at .500.

The Blue Knight basketball team bounced back from a 1-4 start with three straight victories last week. With wins over Hall, Conard, and Bristol Eastern, the Knights are at .500 for the first time this season.

The Knights have a slate of top-ranked CCC teams still to come on their schedule, but Southington coach John Cessario said that he is still optimistic about what his team can do as they continue to search for a seat in the postseason for the first time in his tenure.

“It’s still the growth period where a lot of these guys have never seen varsity minutes,” Cessario said. “We would expect as much as we can from our seniors, but we’re still growing our teeth and taking bites, feeling good about going 4-4. It’s always a concern, but it’s definitely under control. I’m more concerned about not scoring as many points.”

The streak began with a 51-39 victory over Hall at home on Monday. Southington trailed by six at the half, but held Hall to just three points in the third quarter to take the lead.

“We held their big fella Dan Brocke to six points in the entire game,” said Cessario. “When we did that, we were really able to hit some big shots in the second half.”

Jeremy Mercier paced the offense with 15 points and went 5-for-7 from the foul line. Brendan Taylor added 14 points, going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

On Wednesday, Southington rallied from a double-digit deficit to earn its second-straight win.

The Knights were down by 17 points with about a minute to go in the first half, but they ran off four points to cut the deficit to 13 points, 34-21, at halftime. Southington came out firing from the break, going on a 15-0 run to start the second half, outscoring the Chieftains, 20-4, in the quarter.

Mercier made a layup with about five seconds to go in the game to put the Knights up by a point. Southington held on for a 50-49 win.

“He’s a double-double waiting to happen,” said Cessario. “His physical ability is tremendous. He moves very well laterally, which makes him a tough cover for some big guys. He’s starting to take some elbow jumpers and draw a guy out so that he can use his explosiveness. He’s really starting to understand the game.”

The Chieftains fired a contested three-point shot at the buzzer, but the shot was off the mark.

Andrew Lohneiss powered the offense with 20 points on a triad of three-pointers. Mercier backed Lohneiss with 13 points.

On Saturday, the Knights capped the perfect week with a 40-37 win over Bristol Eastern.

The Knights held the Lancers to just two points in the first quarter and led, 20-14, at halftime. With the score tied, 37-37, with about 1:20 to go in the game, Taylor (9 points) went to the foul line and made a pair of free throws to give Southington a two-point edge with a little over a minute to go in the contest.

Bristol Eastern committed a charging foul on their next possession, sending Mike DeFeo (8 points) to the free throw line where he sunk one of two foul shots to extend Southington’s lead to three points.

DeFeo retained possession for Southington by falling on a loose ball near half court on a turnover committed by the Lancers on their next possession. However, a Southington travel gave the ball right back to Bristol Eastern with 22.7 showing on the clock.

“I’m trying to tell our guys to embrace pressure, instead of letting pressure get to them,” said Cessario. “With an older backcourt, we needed to do a better job with handling their traps, and their traps got to us a little bit. But I just praise guys like Mercier who stepped in to actually take some pressure off of them.”

After the Lancers missed a jumper, the Knights lost the ball out of bounds dribbling up court off of the defensive rebound.

“We needed to be stronger with the ball, and they got into us a little bit,” the coach said. “But we were able to make some free throws that wound up giving us what we needed. We work very hard at handling double teams and every-angle pressure, but we need to be able to do a better job. We did enough though, and that’s sometimes a lot better than not doing enough when you’re falling short.”

Bristol Eastern inbounded the ball with about 10 seconds remaining and had a good look at a three-pointer for the tie, but the shot missed at the buzzer.

Mercier marshaled the offense with 16 points.

“We’re still going to handle pressure in practice again and again,” said Cessario. “We have some real good teams coming in the next couple of days, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

The Knights will look to continue their winning streak this week when they host NW Catholic (4-5) and South Windsor (7-1) this week. Southington is currently 4-4 overall.

Lady Knight gymnasts shine at season opener

Kat Rothstein finishes with a flourish on floor as Southington opened the season with a 10-point victory over Conard.

By BRIAN JENNINGS

STAFF WRITER

With only half of last year’s team returning this year, lack of depth was a concern for Southington coach Kaitlyn O’Donnell and the Lady Knight gymnastics team. But in their first meet of the season, depth was not an issue.

“Every person and score counts,” said O’Donnell. “It makes it special because everyone on the team has a spot and is important. It was cool to see those girls who didn’t get to compete last year compete for the first time.”

The Knights opened their season with a strong 131.5-121.65 win over Conard at home on Saturday, Jan. 14. The strong showing was just what the coach expected.

“That was our goal, and we surpassed the goal that we had set for ourselves,” said O’Donnell. “I think that it was a pretty strong start.”

Southington placed first in all four events. Kayla Birmingham sprained both of her ankles about a month ago, but she was still able to lead the Knights in all-around (33.45) and on vault (8.8).

“To be honest, I wasn’t exactly sure how she was going to compete,” the coach said. “She was limited in practice, and we just started doing stuff again this past week. But she worked super hard over the summer, and it carried through to now.”

Birmingham also tied Kat Rothstein on bars (8.3).

“She actually did watered-down routines,” said O’Donnell. “She didn’t do her floor routines yet because she wasn’t feeling quite 100 percent. But to see her still do that well and not be at 100 percent was awesome.”

Rachel Williams led on beam (8.3) and floor (8.8).

“We had a little bit of first-meet jitters,” the coach said. “We did very well for ourselves, and I’m proud of how we started. But going forward, we’ll see a lot more from her.”

O’Donnell has yet to lose a single dual meet since taking over the program for the 2012-13 season and currently holds an overall coaching record of 28-0. Southington’s last loss came against Glastonbury on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 when the Knights fell, 145.2-140.85, to the Tomahawks.

The Knights will look to remain undefeated this week when they host RHAM on Monday, Jan. 16 and Hall on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Beating the flu

Jason Brault drives his opponent onto the mat during a 50-25 victory over Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Even the flu couldn’t stop Blue Knight wrestlers. Up and down the roster, Southington was battling the bug, but the team still posted one of its best weeks yet. With a lopsided dual meet victory, the Knights remained on top of the conference. As runners-up at one of the top out-of-state tournaments in New England, the Knights remain a top team in the region.

“The whole team had the flu last week, and it kind of set us back,” said Southington coach Derek Dion. “We gave them Saturday, Sunday, and Monday off. I was hoping that staying away from each other and resting a little bit would help them come back a little better.”

Even though they weren’t 100 percent when they headed up to the Timberlane Tournament in Plaistow, N.H. on Saturday, Dion said that Southington’s second place finish was no surprise.

“There are always one or two pretty good teams up there,” the coach said. “There have been some other good teams up there, but Timberlane is tough to crack. They’ve been top three in New England for the last 15 to 20 years or so.

Win vs. Hall

JAN. 18—The Knights began the week by earning their ninth win of the season in a 50-25 victory over Hall at home on Wednesday.

“They wrestle tough,” said Dion. “I was impressed with Hall’s kids. (Anthony) Weber does a great job over there. The kids are really going after wrestling tough. We had four really good matchups, which is what we were hoping for.”

The Knights jumped out to an early 12-0 advantage with pins from Austin Abacherli (152), Paul Calo (160). But the Knights struggled from 170 lbs. to 195 lbs., allowing the Warriors to take a brief four-point lead, 16-12.

“We have a lot of work to do,” the coach said. “We’re a little bit inexperienced in those weight classes comparatively to our lighter weights. The whole team is kind of getting over the flu from last week, so we’re trying to get them back into some kind of cardiovascular shape.”

Other pins from the match came from Richie Rivera (220), Jimmy Starr (285), Caleb Brick (106), Jacob Cardozo (113), and Tim Budnik (145). Shaun Wagner (132) clinched the win with a 10-2 major decision.

Budnik scored the fastest pin at 14 seconds into his bout. Calo secured a pin with three seconds remaining in his bout. Southington forfeited the 126-pound weight class.

“It’s a process,” said Dion. “We try to get a little bit better every day. “We got set back a little last week, which was a little disappointing. But hopefully we’ll get back on track and start getting the kids going to where they need to be.”

Timberlane Tournament

JAN. 21—The Knights hit the road for their third out-of-state tournament of the season on Saturday.

“The kids wrestled pretty tough, and everyone that we brought wrestled hard up there,” said Dion. “It was a good weekend for us. The kids got to hang out, stay overnight, and have fun together.”

Southington traveled to Plaistow, NH to wrestle in the Timberlane Tournament, finishing as runner-up with 185 points to host Timberlane (267.5). It was the best finish for the Knights at the tournament since taking second in 2013. Timberlane’s B team took fifth.

“We wanted to get up there and compete with them as best as we could,” the coach said. “We were in first place right before the semifinals, but they ran away from us for a little while. We weren’t able to catch back up.”

The Knights finished with three individual champions—Austin Abacherli (152), Paul Calo (160), and Richie Rivera (220)—and four finalists. Shaun Wagner (132) finished as runner-up, Caleb Brick (106) and Jacob Cardozo (113) each took third, and Tagan Welch (138) finished fourth.

Southington will be back on the mat next week when they travel to Newington on Wednesday, Jan. 25 and return home to host the Connecticut Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Knights are currently 9-1 overall.

The Lady Knight gymnastics team remained undefeated on the with back-to-back wins this past week in their final two home meets of the season.

It might have been odd for the Knights to celebrate their senior night in only their third meet of the season, but Southington coach Kaitlyn O’Donnell said that she doesn’t mind being out on the road the rest of the way.

“It was kind of nice to have all three meets in the beginning,” the coach said. “It gives us time to be in our own gym and make the little adjustments we have to make. Now we know what we have to do once we go out on the road.”

If anything, being on the road for the rest of the season is going to prepare the Knights for the postseason, according to O’Donnell.

“Usually, you have the first-meet jitters, but I kind of feel like we’re getting into a groove now,” said O’Donnell. “So I don’t see it as an issue. It’s definitely preparing us for states. We’re going into every gym and doing the best that we can, adjusting to what equipment we have.”

Win vs. RHAM

JAN. 16—School was not in session on Monday, due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but the Knights were still in class. Southington defeated RHAM, 131.6-97.6, at home and placed first in all four events.

“In the first two meets, you’re kind of adjusting to what’s going on or if I’m going to make my own stuff,” said O’Donnell. “But now, the captains are shifting and taking over everyone, making sure everyone is on the same page and are all hitting their stuff. Just seeing the leaders step up and show them how it’s done has been cool.”

Kayla Birmingham paced the Knights in all-around (33.25), scoring her highest mark on vault (9.0). Kat Rothstein led on bars (8.2) and beam (8.0), Taryn Meenan on vault (9.05), and Rachel Williams on floor (8.8).

Win vs. Hall

JAN. 21—The Knights wrapped up the week and remained undefeated on the year by earning their largest and third-straight win, 134-83.9, against Hall in their final home meet of the season.

“It was really nice to see our team morale pick up,” said O’Donnell. “We’ve been working a lot this week on hitting out routines as a group. It was special to see the seniors hit all of their events and finish out strong.”

The Knights won all four events. Rachel Williams paced the Knights in all-around (34.1), as well as on beam (8.75) and floor (9).

“I was really impressed with beam,” the coach said. “We worked our butts off all week on beam. We really worked hard to try and hit those routines. Yesterday, we kind of struggled, but the girls regrouped themselves.”

Kayla Birmingham (33.2) led on vault (9.05), and Kat Rothstein (33.3) led on bars (8.2).

“We did a lot of team-building stuff,” said O’Donnell. “Starting with our first person in the lineup all the way through to our last, which is our individual, we tried to hit from start to finish. We kept doing rounds of that over and over until we got a lot of routines in. I think that helped.”

The Knights will look to remain undefeated this week when they hit the road for Farmington on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The Blue Knights swimming and diving team added two more victims to their growing list. With wins over Avon and East Hartford, Southington remains undefeated with two more swimmers qualifying for the Class LL meet.

Southington improved to 4-0 with the victories, but the Knights will face their toughest test next week.

Win at Avon

JAN. 18—The Knights began the week at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain on Wednesday where they came away with a five-point victory, 95-90, over Avon, which was their closest meet of the season.

The Falcons took an early advantage with a win in the 200 medley relay, but the Knights kept the score tied for the next two events with the help of second and third-place finishes. Southington regained the lead, 32-30, with first and third-place finishes in the fourth event (50 freestyle) in the see-saw battle but didn’t win the lead for good until the ninth event (200 freestyle relay).

The Knights were up by seven points heading into the final event, but a second-place finish by Zack Blake, Brian Egan, Evan Bender, and Tyler Heidgerd and third-place finish by Ben Wakefield, Nick Kelley, Quintin Kimmel, and Derek Melanson, in the 400 freestyle relay sealed the win for Southington.

First-place finishes included the following: Blake, Brendon Egan, Kelley and PJ Ramsey in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.69); Blake in the 50 freestyle (23.6); and Brendon Egan in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.5).

Blake hit the exact automatic qualifying time in the 50 freestyle to clinch a spot for the state meet.

Win at East Hartford

JAN. 20—A couple days later, the Knights led from start to finish as they cruised to their fourth-straight win, 93-86, at East Hartford.

First-place finishes included the following: Zack Blake in the 200 freestyle (1:57.02) and 100 freestyle (53.1); Evan Bender in the 50 freestyle (24.53); Quintin Kimmel in the 500 freestyle (5:42.83); Derek Melanson in the 100 backstroke (59.85); Julie Duszak in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.83); Bender, Duszak, PJ Ramsey, and Nick Kelley in the 200 medley relay (1:53.33); Blake, Brendon Egan, Kelley, and Ramsey in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.5); and Blake, Bender, Brian Egan, and Brendon Egan in the 400 freestyle relay (3:40.07).

Melanson qualified for the state meet with his time in the 100 backstroke.

Southington currently has three swimmers qualified for the state meet, including Tyler Heidgerd in the 100 Backstroke (59.13).

The Knights will face their toughest test this week against Conard before taking on regional rival Plainville to end the week.

Bobcats outlast Lady Knights

Brianna Harris leads a Lady Knight charge during a double-overtime loss to South Windsor.

By BRIAN JENNINGS

“There are no silver linings in this one tonight,” said a deflated Southington coach Mike Forgione after Friday’s loss to South Windsor at home, “You have to close it out. Everyone tries to be nice and use all the adjectives in the world, but the bottom line is that you have to finish games like this.”

After beginning the season with a 4-2 record through their first six games, everything has since gone south for the Lady Knight basketball team. Southington fell for the fifth time in six games with a 60-57 double-overtime loss to South Windsor on Friday.

“We had opportunities in the fourth quarter and first overtime to finish it, and we didn’t,” said Forgione. “When you have teams down, you have to find a way to finish the game.”

After the Bobcats made one of two free throws to take a two-point lead late in the fourth quarter, Maggie Meehan hit a jump shot to tie the score at 46-46 with just over a minute to play. The Bobcats ran the last minute of the quarter down to the final seconds and missed a deep, contested two-pointer at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

The Knights held a two-point edge late in overtime and were sent to the foul line with 17.2 seconds remaining. A missed free throw on a one-and-one allowed the Bobcats to knot the score up at 54-54 on a layup with 2.5 seconds left, sending the game into a second overtime.

“We went man-to-man, and maybe we should have stayed in a zone,” the coach said. “I was trying to prevent them from kicking it out for a three. At least make them earn a jump shot in a man-to-man, but you can’t give them a layup.”

South Windsor went up by two points, 58-56, on a pair of free throws with 31.1 seconds remaining in the second overtime, but the Knights were able to cut the deficit to one after Meehan made one of two free throws with 10.4 seconds left.

“We were trying to set a screen for Maggie and get her open on the inbounds,” said Forgione. “Then we wanted to set a screen right away so she could drive and either look for a shot or look to kick it to Hartlee or Bri for a three. But she made a nice play, got fouled, and was aggressive.”

A couple of missed free throws by the Bobcats on their next possession allotted the Knights enough time to grab the rebound and rush to the other end of the floor for one last shot. However, the Knights were called for traveling on the fast break to the basket with 4.2 seconds showing on the clock.

“In that situation with no timeouts, you can’t really coach them,” the coach said. “You just have to let them make a play. If you start saying stuff, they start thinking too much. You have to hope that they can create something or pull up, not turn the ball over.”

Following the turnover, the Bobcats eventually pulled away on a pair of free throws.

“Not only did we miss some foul shots in the fourth quarter and overtime, but they came back and converted,” said Forgione. “It was kind of a double-edged sword.”

Meehan (3 rebounds) marshaled the offense with 21 points on a pair of three-pointers and went 5-for-6 from the foul line. Hartlee Meier (8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) backed Meehan with 14 points. Brianna Harris contributed with nine points and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Madison Hulten (5 points, 3 assists) grabbed 14 rebounds

The Knights will be back on the court this week with games against Tolland (6-6) and Glastonbury (9-2). Southington is currently 5-6 overall.

Indoor track team shines at regular season finale

On Saturday, Jan. 21, Southington’s indoor track and field team capped the regular season with more postseason athletes than last season. The Knights improved multiple state marks and qualified seven more athletes in five more events for the state meet at the SCC Coaches Invitational in New Haven.

“To get inside the meet, you had to make a mark that was pretty much close to a state qualifier already,” said Southington coach Dan Dachelet. “So it was a great opportunity for some of the varsity kids that are starting to ramp up mentally for that higher level of competition.”

Different from most meets, the SCC Coaches Invitational is a split meet where the boys competed in the morning and the girls competed in the afternoon. With less recovery time between events, the meet can add stress to tired legs. But the Knights rose to the challenge.

Southington brought a total of 24 athletes to compete in 19 events at last year’s state meet. The Knights currently have 17 females in 13 out of 15 events and 14 male athletes in 10 out of 15 events qualified for the state meet. It is an impressive feat, considering that most of Southington’s meets this season were cancelled due to inclement weather.

“I would have liked to have another opportunity where I could have run a couple more kids in these events that still have good races ahead of them or could have had some better races,” said Dachelet. “It’s just a limitation on the number of tracks in the state and the number of meets that they offer.”

Southington still has one last opportunity to load even more Knights into the state meet when they compete at the upcoming CCC Championship, but Dachelet said that one meet won’t be enough to make up the meets that they missed.

“That’s the nature of sports,” said Dachelet. “Obviously, you want these kids that have worked so hard to achieve a goal that are that close. Most of them will at least have outdoor though.”

At the SCC Coaches Invitational, the girls team placed fifth out of 40 teams. The boys team tied for 30th out of 42 teams. The following females qualified for the state meet: Sarah Minkiewicz, Anny Moquete, Brooke Lynch, and Kate Kemnitz in the 4x800m relay (10:45.03); Isabella Scalise in the 1600m (5:48.27); and Trinity Cardillo in the shot put (30’3.5”).

“Trinity Cardillo never picked up a shot put in her life,” said Dachelet. “But she’s throwing a state-qualifying mark at a four-foot personal record in one day.”

The following males qualified for the state meet: Jeffrey Hannigan in the 600m (1:31.73); Mark Murdy in the 1600m (4:43.61); and Tyson Harris (37.0) and Elijah Rodriguez (38.93) in the 300m.

The following improved their state marks: Tayler Riddick, Jenna Sheehan, Adeline Kilgore, and Samantha Przybylski in the 4x200m relay (1:54.22); Kilgore in the 55m dash (7.82); Kemnitz in the 1000m (3:14.67); Riddick in the long jump (15’1.5”); and Ian Agnew, Casey Selinske, Joe Verderame, and Tyler Cyr in the 4x200m relay (1:39.48).

“Jenna Sheehan is one of the smoothest runners I’ve seen in a long time,” the coach said. “She’s coming out and qualifying as a freshman. Watching her do that with very little training is exciting for the future.”

The time in the girls 4x200m relay broke a school record (1:56.2), which was set by Ashley Sisk, Alexa Cox, Alissa Munoz, and Alexandra LaPorte during the 2008-09 season.

Sydney Garrison tied her state mark by tying for eighth (4’8”) in the high jump. Zachary Burleigh also tied his state mark by finishing ninth (11’) in the pole vault.

Amanda Howe won the shot put (39’4”), and Megan Biscoglio won the pole vault (10’). Other top-eight finishers included the following: Harris (300m), Kemnitz (1000m), Murdy (1600m), the girls 4x200m relay, and the girls 4x400m relay.

The Knights will enter the postseason this week when they return to Hillhouse High School to compete against the top athletes in the conference at the CCC Championship on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The hot streak came to an end for the Blue Knight basketball team after three wins last week. Southington dropped their fifth game of the season in a two-point overtime loss, 50-48, to South Windsor in their lone contest of the week on Friday, Jan. 20.

“I’ll always appreciate our team’s effort,” said Southington coach John Cessario. “We have to really embrace some of the fundamentals, and the fundamentals bit us a little bit tonight.”

Coming into the game against a team that had only lost one game, Cessario said that he told his team to throw out the first eight games of the season and just play possession-to-possession basketball.

“We did that from the start,” the coach said. “It was 12-6 with a little momentum, and we hit two three’s. People started to feel comfortable while playing hard. That’s something that we’re trying to strive to achieve on a game-to-game basis.”

The Bobcats led, 10-6, by the end of the first quarter, but the Knights scored 17 points in the second quarter to take a one-point lead, 23-22, at halftime.

“The goal coming into a game like this against a team that is known for their two-three is to unlock the zone, and I felt like we did that,” said Cessario. “We got low-post, short-corner, and high elbow touches, along with three-pointers. We were able to get some transition buckets and defended very well. We were feeling pretty good.”

After holding a two-point lead, 35-33, at the end of the third quarter, the Knights fell behind late in the fourth quarter, but tied the score at 40-40 on a three-pointer by Brendan Taylor (10 points) with about a minute to play.

The Knights had possession with 8.5 seconds left in regulation, but lost possession by throwing the ball out of bounds on an inbounds play.

“We recognized that they went man-to-man, and I tried to call a timeout,” the coach said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t seen. So we turned the ball over, and it gave South Windsor an opportunity to get the ball in the hands of two very impressive guards. We would have liked to have had that timeout recognized so we could set up a man-to-man look, but that’s not the way it went.”

The Bobcats missed a jump shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. However, a pair of quick three-pointers and four foul shots propelled the Bobcats past the Knights in overtime.

South Windsor’s Kewan Smoot paced the Bobcats with 29 points. Shane Young backed Smoot with 10 points.

“You can’t give opportunities to two players like (Kewan) Smoot and (Shane) Young to have the ball in their hands more,” said Cessario. “Unfortunately, we didn’t do it. But to be in a battle like that, win or lose, will definitely be a benefit down the road.”

Andrew Lohneiss paced the offense with 11 points. Jeremy Mercier and Mike DeFeo contributed with eight points apiece.

“I believe that guys like Tim O’Shea, Jack Herms, and Colin Burdette will grow as players from being in these types of games,” the coach said. “I thought we had that tonight.”

The Knights will look to get back on track next week with games against Rockville (1-7) and Glastonbury (1-8). Southington is currently 4-5 overall.

Gundersen signs with Florida Southern

Matt Gundersen takes a moment to celebrate with his mother after signing a letter of intent for her alma mater, Florida Southern University.

Matt Gundersen’s mother graduated from Florida Southern College, but that was only part of the reason why he inked a National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse for the Division II Moccasins next year.

“The coach, Marty Ward, is a great guy,” said Gundersen. “He’s energized and loves the game, as well as his entire coaching staff. I just get excited to play for him.”

After the starting Blue Knight midfielder stayed overnight on the campus with the team, Gundersen fell in love with the school. When he was offered a spot on the team, he took it.

Gundersen said he felt that the program wants to win every game, which reassured him that he was in the right place.

“When you see that, you kind of get a sense that this is a competitive school,” said Gundersen. “They’re contending for a NCAA Division II championship every year. That’s why I wanted to go there.”

For Gundersen, it came down to Florida Southern and the Division III Rangers of Drew University in Madison University. He has family just 20 minutes away from Drew University, but Florida Southern still made more sense.

Matt Gundersen, front right, kicked off the signing period for the Blue Knights with a National Letter of Intent signing for lacrosse. Back, from left, SHS athletic director Greg Ferry and SHS boys lacrosse coach Ron Chase Jr.

“It’s not that I didn’t like the coach or the team,” said Gundersen. “The school itself didn’t give me that same feeling that Florida Southern did.”

Gundersen visited Florida Southern multiple times and even participated in lacrosse camps there. But once he found out that the school didn’t have a football team, his mind was made up.

“When I’m sitting around doing nothing, I’ll find myself with a lacrosse stick in my hand rather than a football,” said Gundersen. “I realized that lacrosse is the sport that I want to work the hardest at and make myself the best at.”

Although the heavy hits and big, leaping catches draw many people to football, Gundersen said the action in lacrosse is what has his heart set on playing at the collegiate level. Southington coach Ron Chase said that Gundersen’s decision to play at Florida Southern was an excellent one.

“It’s an up-and-coming Division II program,” said Chase. “He’s in Florida, and it’s a great school academically and athletically. He’ll get a chance to really play earlier in his career than a lot of student-athletes do when they go off and play in college.”

Chase said that Gundersen’s work ethic and cerebral ability will make him a great player at the collegiate level.

“He has a great work ethic in the weight room, classroom, and on the field,” the coach said. “He’s a smart kid. He makes good decisions on the field. To play college lacrosse, you have to be a thinker out there. You have to understand the game and see things develop before they do. That’s something he definitely does.”
